BACHELOR DEGREES IN LAW

1. In addition to the Faculty Award Requirements candidates for Awards of the faculty must comply with the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards listed in this Handbook.

2. In exceptional circumstances and notwithstanding anything contained in the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards and the Degree or Diploma Award Requirements, the faculty may in any case in which it may deem it appropriate to do so, dispense with or amend any conditions of or prescription of these Requirements.

3. The faculty will publish annually a list of subjects available to candidates. The list appears as Table VI in the Master Schedule of Subjects.

4.1 Candidates for Awards of the faculty may apply to obtain credit for previous tertiary study as detailed in the Faculty Policy Statement on credit transfer and associated guidelines.

4.2 Unless the faculty otherwise determines, credit gained for any subject shall be cancelled eleven years after the date of the examination upon which the credit is based if by then the candidate has not completed the course of study prescribed for the degree.

DEGREES AND CERTIFICATES IN BUSINESS, COMMERCE, ECONOMICS, MANAGEMENT AND TOURISM

Application of the requirements

1. In addition to the Faculty Award Requirements candidates for Awards must comply with the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards listed in this handbook.

2. In exceptional circumstances the Executive Dean, with the approval of the relevant Head of School, may dispense with or amend any requirements or prescription of the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards, Faculty Award Requirements and Degree, Diploma or Certificate Award Requirements.

Enrolment in awards

3. A person who holds an Award listed in General Requirement 1.1 may not be a candidate for that Award in the same discipline.

Credit

4. Candidates for Awards of the faculty may apply to obtain credit for previous tertiary study as detailed in the Faculty Policy Statement on credit transfer and associated guidelines.

5. The faculty will publish annually a list of subjects available to candidates. The list appears as Table II in the Master Schedule of Subjects.

6. In exceptional circumstances the Executive Dean with the approval of the relevant Head of the School may permit a candidate to graduate with fewer than the stipulated units of study for an Award offered in the faculty.

HONOURS DEGREES IN BUSINESS AND COMMERCE

(Discipline areas: Accounting, Finance, Economics, Tourism, Management, Marketing, Human Resource Management)

General Requirements

1.1 A candidate for a degree with Honours shall, in the case of Commerce or Business:

complete the requirements of the pass degree, or an equivalent degree from another university;

include in the degree course the appropriate pass degree subjects, as set out in the program of study for each specific pass degree and described in Table II of the Master Schedule of Subjects, or equivalent subjects from another university;

include in the degree course honours subjects specified in the specific Honours programs.

Enrolment

2.1 An application by a student to enrol for an Honours degree must be approved by the Head of School. Normally, a student will not be permitted to enrol for an Honours degree unless a minimum average grade of credit has been obtained in the pass degree subjects relevant to the field in which Honours is to be taken.

2.2 In the case of Honours programs in Commerce or Business a graduate who has been awarded an appropriate pass degree within the faculty may apply to enrol for an Honours degree provided the pass degree was awarded not more than two academic years prior to the year in which enrolment in an Honours degree is sought. Such a candidate shall comply with the requirements of the pass degree and shall complete such additional work (including pass degree subjects) as the Head of the appropriate program may prescribe.

Thesis

3. The subject of any thesis shall be approved by the relevant Head of program and the thesis shall usually be presented before 30 November in the candidate`s final year of study, unless otherwise determined by the Head of School.

Degree specific requirements The Honours program in Commerce

4.1 A candidate for the degree shall:

4.1.1 complete the specified program of study for the Pass degree to obtain a minimum of 72 units; and

4.1.2 obtain a minimum of 24 units of subjects specified in the program of study for the Honours degree.

4.2 The degree with Honours may be taken in the fields of Accounting, Finance or Economics.

The Honours programs in Business specialising in Human Resource Management, Management, Marketing, or Tourism

5.1 A candidate for the degree shall:

5.1.1 complete the specified program of study for the Pass degree to obtain a minimum of 72 units; and

5.1.2 obtain a minimum of 24 units of subjects specified in the program of study for the Honours degree.

6. Programs of study for these degrees are available from the School of Business.

DEGREES and CERTIFICATES IN the creative ARTS

Entitlement to attend

1. A student of the University shall be entitled to attend any lecture with the permission of the lecturer.

Application of requirements

2.1 In addition to the Faculty Award Requirements candidates must comply with the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards listed in this Student Handbook and specific degree or certificate Award Requirements.

2.2 In exceptional circumstances the Executive Dean, where appropriate in consultation with the relevant Head of School, may dispense with or amend any requirements of or prescription by the University Requirements for Undergraduate Coursework Awards, Faculty Award Requirements and specific degree, diploma or certificate Award Requirements. Any major dispensation of the requirements should be reported to the faculty.

2.3 The Executive Dean, where appropriate in consultation with the appropriate Head of School, may permit a candidate to graduate with fewer than the stipulated units of study for an Award offered in the faculty.

Enrolment in awards

3. A person who holds an award listed in General Requirements 1.1 and 1.2 may not be a candidate for that award in the same discipline.

Credit

4. Candidates for awards of the faculty may apply to obtain credit for previous tertiary study as detailed in the Faculty Policy Statement on credit transfer and associated guidelines.

5. The faculty will publish annually a list of subjects available to candidates. The list appears as Table I in the Master Schedule of Subjects.

Coherence of degree structure

6. The faculty must be satisfied that the completed Award constitutes a coherent whole.

The grade of Pass Conceded

7.1 The grade of Pass Conceded may be recommended by the College of Music, Visual Arts and Theatre directly on the basis of the particular examination. This grade may also be awarded by the faculty following consideration of the candidate's overall result for the year.

7.2 A candidate who is granted the grade of Pass Conceded in a subject shall, for the purposes of Requirement 6.1, be deemed to have passed the subject and shall be credited with the appropriate units, but may not enrol for a more advanced subject in any discipline requiring the first as a prerequisite except with the approval of the appropriate Head of School.

7.3 The number of units that may be credited at Pass Conceded level shall not exceed a total as determined from time to time by the faculty.

7.4 A candidate awarded the grade of Pass Conceded may apply to the Head of the School concerned for permission to attempt to convert that grade to a Pass grade. Such re-examination will not be counted towards aggregate units work load for an academic year.

7.5 All applications under Requirement 6.4 must be approved by the Executive Dean.

Non-degree students

8.1 A person who is not proceeding to a degree may enrol for any subject with the approval of the Head of School and on completing the subject shall be entitled to receive an official statement to that effect on application to the Registrar.

8.2 A person who has not qualified for Ordinary or Alternative Entry Admission may enrol for any subject with the approval of the Head of School in the terms of Requirement 3.1, but may enrol for subjects in more than one School only with the approval of the faculty. Subjects completed by such a student may not be credited towards a degree except by permission of the faculty.

Saving clause

9. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary contained in these Requirements, the faculty may in any case in which it may deem it appropriate to do so, dispense with or suspend any condition of or prescription by these Requirements. Any such action by the faculty shall be recorded for the purposes of an annual review.

BACHELOR OF ARTS -- BACHELOR OF business

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS

Requirements for completion of the degree course

1. A candidate for the pass degree in Business shall follow the specified program shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors to obtain a minimum of 72 units. The normal time for completion is three years of full-time study.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS -- BACHELOR OF COMMERCE

1.1 A candidate for the degree shall pursue studies to obtain normally a minimum of 96 units. The requirements of the degree are normally completed in four years of full-time study.

1.2 The 96 units shall be obtained in accordance with the minimal requirements of the Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Commerce degrees.

1.3 The distribution of the units shall meet the minimal requirements set out in the Schedule.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS -- BACHELOR OF Economics

1.1 A candidate for the pass degree shall pursue studies to obtain normally a minimum of 96 units. The requirements of the degree are normally completed in four years of full-time study.

1.2 The 96 units shall be obtained in accordance with the requirements set out in the Schedule below.

Withdrawal from the joint degree

2. A candidate may at any stage consult with the Academic Adviser for Economics on the requirements necessary to change to a Bachelor of Business or to a Bachelor of Economics.

The joint degree does not have honours. The honours degrees attach to the single degrees of Bachelor of Business with Honours and Bachelor of Economics with Honours and are available to single or joint degree students.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS -- BACHELOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

1.1 A candidate for the pass degree shall pursue studies to obtain normally a minimum of 96 units. The requirements of the degree are normally completed in four years of full-time study.

1.2 The 96 units shall be obtained in accordance with the minimal requirements of the Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Information Technology degrees.

1.3 The distribution of the units shall meet the minimal requirements set out in the Schedule.

1.2 The 96 units shall be obtained in accordance with the requirements set out in the Schedule below.

Special Notes

2. A candidate who cannot take one of the compulsory subjects, or for whom a special case can be made, may be permitted to take an extra elective in place of one compulsory subject.

Requirements for the degree

1.1 Honours in the joint degree may be completed as:

BBus(Hons)-BPsych(Hons); BBus(Hons)-BPsych;
BBus-BPsych(Hons) depending on the requirements of individual candidates.

1.2 A candidate for the Honours degree shall normally pursue studies as follows:

BBus(Hons)-BPsych(Hons) -- six years to obtain 144 units;

BBus(Hons)-BPsych -- five years to obtain 120 units;

BBus-BPsych(Hons) -- five years to obtain 120 units.

1.3 Candidates undertaking honours shall complete the requirements of the joint pass degree followed by the normal honours requirements in either or both components of the joint degree depending on the degree in which the candidate enrols.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS -- BACHELOR OF TOURISM MANAGEMENT

1.1 A candidate for the pass degree shall pursue studies to obtain normally a minimum of 96 units. The requirements of the degree are normally completed in four years of full-time study.

1.2 The 96 units shall be obtained in accordance with the requirements set out in the specified program of study shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

BACHELOR OF BUSINESS WITH HONOURS -- BACHELOR OF TOURISM MANAGEMENT

Award requirements

1.1 A candidate for the joint degree, Bachelor of Business with Honours - Bachelor of Tourism Management shall:

complete the requirements of the joint pass degree, or an equivalent degree from this or another University;

include in the joint degree course the appropriate pass degree subjects, as set out in the program of study or equivalent subjects from this or another University;

include in the degree course an additional 24 units of specified honours subjects.

Enrolment

2.1 An application by a student to enrol for an honours degree must be approved by the Head of School. Withdrawal from the joint degree

2.1 A candidate may, at any stage, consult with the Academic Adviser regarding changing to a Bachelor of Commerce or to a Bachelor of Economics.

Students who wish to seek accreditation from the professional accounting bodies will need to include:

CO1003:03 at level 1;

CO2002:03, CO2101:03, CO2502:03 and CO2601:03 at level 2;

CO3011:03, CO3012:03, CO3013:03, CO3105:03 and CO3111:03 at level 3.

The joint degree does not have honours. The honours degrees attach to the single degrees of Bachelor of Commerce with Honours and Bachelor of Economics with Honours and are available to single or joint degree students.

BACHELOR OF Commerce -- BACHELOR OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Administration of the joint degree

1.1 The joint degree shall be administered by the Executive Deans of the Faculty of Law, Business and the Creative Arts and the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology.

Requirements for the degree

2.1 A candidate for the pass degree shall pursue studies to obtain normally a minimum of 98 units. The requirements of the degree are generally completed in four years of full-time study.

2.2 The 98 units shall be obtained in accordance with the requirements set out in the Schedule below.

BACHELOR OF COMMERCE-BACHELOR OF LAWS

Award requirements

1.1 A candidate for the pass degree shall pursue studies to obtain normally a minimum of 120 units. The requirements for the degree are normally completed in five years of full-time study.

1.2 The 120 units, from 2.1 above, shall be obtained in accordance with the requirements set out in the Schedule shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

Application for enrolment

2.1 An applicant for the joint degree may apply for candidature at the first, second or third year.

2.2 A candidate who has previously graduated with either component of the joint degree will not be approved to enrol in the joint degree.

Withdrawal from the joint degree course

3.1 A candidate who has completed the requirements of the first year of the joint degree may convert to candidature for the degree of Bachelor of Laws without loss of credit. (Note: conversion after completion of any later year of the joint degree will normally entail loss of credit for non-Law subjects completed beyond level 1.)

3.2 A candidate who has met the requirements of years one to three of the course of study prescribed in the Schedule, shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors, and who does not complete the requirements of the fourth and fifth years of the course, shall consult the Executive Dean on the requirements for completion of the degree of Bachelor of Commerce.

BACHELOR OF COMMERCE-BACHELOR OF LAWS WITH HONOURS IN BOTH OR EITHER DISCIPLINES

Award requirements

1.1 Honours in the joint degree may be completed as:

BCom(Hons)-LLB(Hons); BCom(Hons)-LLB;
BCom-LLB(Hons)

depending on the requirements of individual candidates.

1.2 A candidate for the Honours degree shall normally pursue studies as follows:

BCom(Hons)-LLB(Hons) -- six years to obtain 144 units;

BCom(Hons)-LLB -- six years to obtain 144 units;

BCom-LLB(Hons) -- five years to obtain 120 units.

1.3 Candidates undertaking honours shall complete the requirements of the joint pass degree followed by the requirements of the normal Honours year in either or both components of the joint degree depending on the degree in which the candidate enrols.

BACHELOR OF COMMUNICATION DESIGN

1. A person who wishes to enrol for the degree of Bachelor of Communication Design shall be required to demonstrate at interview suitability for the course and provide a portfolio of relevant work as specified by the College of Music, Visual Arts and Theatre.

To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Communication Design degree (with majors in either Digital Design or Visual Communication) students must successfully complete the prescribed subjects to a minimum value of 72 units in accordance with these requirements. 3. The normal minimum time for completion of the degree is one year of full-time study or two years of part-time study. The maximum period is two years of full-time study and four years of part-time study.

2. Applicants must have completed the requirements for a pass degree with a similar amount of economics to the pass degree at James Cook University, at this university or at another Australian or overseas university. Applicants will be required to have a minimum average grade of credit in the pass degree subjects relevant to their honours degree.

3. In special cases students may be permitted to enrol part-time in economics honours.

BACHELOR OF LAWS AND BACHELOR OF LAWS WITH HONOURS

Requirements for completion of the degree course

1.1 A candidate for the pass degree in Law shall follow a course of study as specified in the program shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors, to obtain a minimum of 96 units. The time for completion of the degree is four years full-time.

1.2 Candidates enrolling in Law who have completed a bachelor degree at this or another University in any other field of study (graduate candidates) shall follow a course of study as specified under the heading Graduate Entry Program shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors, to obtain a minimum of 72 units. The time for completion of the degree is three years of full-time study.

Limitation of enrolment

2.1 In selecting the subjects for which a candidate seeks to enrol in any year the candidate shall adhere as far as possible to the order in which the subjects of the course are set out in the program.

2.2 A candidate who has completed all the subjects listed as level 1, level 2 and level 3 subjects in the program may enrol in the professional subjects listed in Requirement 3.

Professional subjects

3. With the approval of the faculty, a candidate may enrol for and take the examination in the following subjects,14 passes in which may be required for admission to practice, but no credit for a pass in any such subject may be applied in satisfaction of the requirements for the pass or honours degree:

Supplementary Examination

4. A candidate who has failed the final subject towards the degree or towards admission as a barrister or solicitor and who gained 40 per cent or more of the marks for that subject, may be granted a supplementary examination in that subject.

Bachelor of Laws with Honours

5. A candidate for the degree with honours (a) shall fulfil the requirements for the pass degree at such a standard as the faculty may from time to time determine; and (b) shall be required to submit a research assignment on a topic approved by the faculty. The grade of honours will be calculated in accordance with the faculty's approved policy15.

BACHELOR OF MUSIC

3.1.1 research, if that person has obtained at least a distinction in a research-based music subject and a distinction in a practice-based music subjects as specified by the Head of College;

3.1.2 practice, if that person has obtained at least a distinction in a practice-based music subject and a credit in a research-based music subject as specified by the Head of College.

3.2 The faculty may permit entry to the Honours degree by a person who holds the Bachelor of Music degree of this or another University, or who holds an equivalent degree, where it is satisfied that the degree justifies candidature for Honours. Candidates entering after graduation shall complete such conditions of Requirement 2 as the Head of College may specify.

3.3 The subjects selected shall be in accordance with the majors in Music with Honours shown under Undergraduate Courses and Majors.

Resubmission for Final Honours

4. A candidate shall not be permitted to present more than once for the final examination in the same honours discipline, but may be permitted by the examiners to resubmit the honours thesis or comparable prescribed work.

Award of the degree

5. In the award of Honours, consideration shall be given to the candidate's record throughout the course.

BACHELOR OF MUSIC -- BACHELOR OF EDUCATION16

This award is not being offered until at least 1 January 2005 during which time no new enrolments will be accepted. Continuing students enrolled prior to 3 July 2003 may continue in the award and should consult the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences section of this Handbook.

3.2 A candidate enrolled for the degree of Bachelor of Visual Arts may be invited by the Head of the College to enrol for the degree of Bachelor of Visual Arts with Honours (Professional Practice) if that candidate has obtained a minimum of 72 units by successful completion of the level 1, level 2 and level 3 subjects prescribed in the program, provided that the grade of at least distinction has been obtained in the following level 3 subject of Visual Arts Practice and that the grade of at least credit has been obtained in the level 3 subjects of Drawing and Art History and Theory.

3.3 A person who holds the degree of Bachelor of Visual Arts of this or another University, or who holds an equivalent qualification, may be permitted to enrol in the Honours course where the Head of the College is satisfied that the qualification justifies candidature in one of the honours specialisations currently offered by Visual Arts. Requirements include a provision that candidates entering after graduation shall complete such specifications of Requirement 2 of the Bachelor of Visual Arts as the Head of College may specify.

Admission requirements

1. Persons who wish to enrol for the Certificate of Underwater Imaging shall be required to meet the following admission requirements:

1.1 possession of at least Open Water diving certification and a minimum of 15 logged hours of diving experience;

1.2 possession of a current AS2299 Dive Medical Certificate or equivalent;

1.3 acceptance onto the JCU Dive Register;

1.4 completion and submission of the appropriate application form.

Constitution of the course

2. To qualify for an award, a candidate must normally have satisfactorily completed the subjects PT1411 and PT1412 . The normal time for completion of the Certificate is one semester part-time, the program of study normally being covered in two full-time blocks of seventeen days duration.

These block mode studies are normally offered outside of normal semester teaching weeks to enable enrolment by students from all faculties and, subject to adequate enrolments, the course may be offered more than once per calendar year.
