Students will complete their study of tonal music theory and composition, gain an appreciation of music theatre from the late 19th century to the present and will acquire analytical and compositional skills in relation to instrumental and vocal works within the music-theatre genre. This subject concludes the previous studies in orchestration, with the arrangement of music-theatre works for large ensembles.

Learning Objectives:

gain an understanding of techniques used in tonal music composition and analysis;

gain an understanding and practical knowledge of techniques used in the composition and analysis of music theatre works;

gain a knowledge of orchestration and arranging techniques for large ensembles.

Assessment by components of: Tonal music - worksheets (15%); assignment (15%); examination (10%). Composition - portfolio (15%); analysis (15%); examination (10%). Orchestration - arrangement (10%); worksheets (5%); performance (5%).
