Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

An introduction to graphic design and illustration theory and practice. Students will undertake a series of lectures, tutorials and practical exercises designed to develop a broad understanding of the function, philosophy and role of graphic design and illustration in contemporary society. Students will develop an expertise in software specific to digital illustration, a range of design related skills and will examine several illustration fields. This subject includes further exploration of typography, corporate identity, image development, traditional illustration and visualisation skills.

Learning Objectives:

demonstrate a basic understanding of traditional and digital pre-press processes and apply this knowledge in the formulation of design work;

utilise available computer software and information resources at a basic level for creative, research and technical purposes;

produce effective, limited colour graphical symbols, icons and logos;

have a working knowledge of traditional techniques and media;

become familiar with a more comprehensive range of illustration fields;

produce effective full colour drawings and illustrations for publication.

Assessment by three practical assignments (75%); visual journal (25%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject.
