Visual Communication Study 3

Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

Students completing this subject will examine the influences, visual cultures and sub-cultures of our contemporary society with examination of how communications can be focussed to match the requirements and profile of their intended audience. Students will become familiar with design practice, the role of colour in communication design, type application, iconography and symbolism, creative problem solving, applying appropriate marketing research and information resources. Traditional and digital illustration skills will also be further developed and emphasis will be on producing industry standard/professional images.

Learning Objectives:

demonstrate a growing familiarity with traditional and digital pre-press processes as well as a familiarity with digital media;

familiarity with a range of available design and market related resources (technical, commercial, research, marketing and production);

demonstrate an awareness of the multifaceted communications needs of clients and audiences and devise effective solutions utilising appropriate media;

produce high quality professional work while developing a highly personal and imaginative individual vision;

demonstrate an ability to cost work and develop an awareness of the economic and social constraints that determine the content of illustration.

Assessment by three practical assignments (75%); visual journal (25%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject.
