Western Art Music

26 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials. Semester 1.

Available to BMus students or other students who pass the University's music rudiments test.

Developments in musical styles, forms and media in western art music will be studied through observation and analysis of selected composers. The subject will address a range of musical styles.

Learning Objectives:

acquire a familiarity with major musical repertoire, stylistic changes and associated terminology relevant to western art music;

acquire knowledge of the life, times and music of composers;

discuss, analyse and compare relationships between music and the other art forms selected during this period;

aurally recognise, describe, analyse and compare selected pieces of music by a representative selection of composers;

relate changes in musical style to underlying social and intellectual theories, philosophies and aesthetics of the period;

develop fundamental strategies in musical and historical judgement.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (30%); essay (2500 words) (40%); seminar (30%).
