Students will continue their ongoing study of tonal music theory and composition, gain an appreciation of film music from the 1930s through to the present and gain an understanding of the various functions of music in film. Further studies in orchestration and arrangement are undertaken with a focus on brass and percussion instruments.

Learning Objectives:

gain an understanding of techniques used in tonal music composition and analysis;

gain an understanding of film music composition techniques and analysis;

gain a knowledge of western brass and percussion instruments and the manner in which music is composed and arranged for brass and percussion ensembles.

Assessment by components of: Tonal music - worksheets (15%); assignment (15%); examination (10%). Composition - portfolio (15%); analysis (15%); examination (10%). Orchestration - arrangement (10%); worksheets (5%); performance (5%).
