This is the fourth of six units in the Bachelor of Communication Design's multimedia stream. Through a series of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions, this subject examines the role of the internet and world wide web in today's communications industry. Emphasis within this subject will be on the development of design and production skills to enable the design of functional and effective websites. This subject examines a number of web design and production issues including: interface design and human responses to visual messages; website layout and navigation; impact versus functionality in web design; image preparation and optimisation; basic web database structure; technological changes and evolving bandwidth issues; and website security. This subject will use extensively a range of industry standard software to produce a number of practical assignments.

Learning Objectives:

apply appropriate and creative design solutions to given problems and follow these solutions through several production phases in a manner suited to the selected production process;

understand the role and limitations of animation within multimedia production for web and other screen based applications;

develop appropriate designs for the web in response to specific briefs;

understand the correct preparation of images (both still and movie files) for use on the web;

appreciate a range of factors which influence website performance.

Assessment by four practical assignments (total 80%); research seminar (10%); participation (10%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject.
