The subject is designed particularly for students with limited musical experience. Not available to BMus students.

This subject provides a bird's-eye view of the plethora of music in western society over the last thousand years. The interface between popular and `art' styles is investigated, although there is a focus on art music. The subject surveys changes in musical styles in terms of parallel developments in broader artistic, socio-economic, political and intellectual contexts. There is a focus on listening and recognition with the purpose of acquiring skills in discrimination between musical styles of different historical periods.

Learning Objectives:

acquire a basic knowledge of the history of music;

be able to aurally distinguish between the major musical genres and styles;

develop a listening diary and expand the student's knowledge of repertoire.

Assessment by written assignments (40%); minor projects (20%); listening diary (40%).
