Creating Music 2A

Students will continue their ongoing study of tonal music theory and composition techniques and will undertake a study of jazz theory, composition and improvisation. Further studies in orchestration and arrangement are undertaken with a focus on jazz arrangement, along with further studies in the techniques of music anlaysis.

Learning Objectives:

gain an understanding of techniques used in tonal music composition and anlaysis;

gain an understanding of jazz and improvisation techniques and analysis;

gain a knowledge of the jazz ensemble and the manner in which music is composed and arranged for jazz ensembles.

Assessment by components of: Tonal music - worksheets (15%); assignment (15%); examination (10%). Composition - portfolio (15%); analysis (15%); examination (10%). Orchestration - arrangement (10%); worksheets (5%); performance (5%).
