Students undertaking this subject will acquire skills in the use of a suite of music software programs and experience with a range of music technology hardware devices. The subject builds on introductory music technology techniques gained in the Creating Music 1A and 1B subjects. Areas examined include sound synthesis, MIDI, digital audio, sound recording and multi-media applications. Additionally, students will acquire a grasp of the history and aesthetics of electronic and computer music through a study of set works, selected course readings and the set texts.

Learning Objectives:

gain a fundamental knowledge of sound synthesis, MIDI and digital audio systems;

gain an appreciation of the history and aesthetics of electronic and computer music in both contemporary and art music settings;

gain practical experience in the field of sound recording;

gain practical skills and knowledge of multi-media software for web authoring, graphics manipulation and CD-ROM development.

Assessment by assignments (60%); examination (20%); essay (20%).
