History of World Theatre

20 hours lectures, 10 hours workshops. Full year.

Students will study the development of the Western Theatre from the 5th century BC to the end of the 20th century. Areas of inquiry will include the nature of theatre; the role of the playwright and the development of drama; the changes and development of the theatre space and design; the development of the actor's technique and the evolution of the actor-spectator relationship.

Learning Objectives:

to introduce students to the theoretical and historical underpinnings of theatre practice.

Assessment by two end-of-semester examainations (40%); tutorial attendance and participation (20%); essays (40%).
