Writing for Theatre

HECS Band 1

26 hours workshops. Semester 2.

This subject provides students with the fundamental skills of playwriting in order to create written material for the stage. Students will participate in a series of writing exercises to `free' the writer's voice and explore strategies for discovering, building and shaping character. Workshopping written material with actors will be an integral part of the stage writing process.

Learning Objectives:

to develop skills in narrative construction;

to develop skills in writing dialogue;

to explore strategies for discovering, building and shaping character.

Assessment by seminar participation (20%); minor project (20%); major project (40%); writer's journal (20%).
