Legal Systems and Methods

26 hours lectures, 12 hours tutorials. Semester 1 and 2.

Available to all level 1 students.

The doctrine of stare decisis ; the hierarchy of courts; appellate case analysis; precedent; principles of statutory interpretation; introduction to legal research.

Learning Objectives:

to provide law students with the necessary tools of analysis to engage in high level legal research and writing;

to achieve critical awareness of the elements of sound legal decision-making;

to introduce students to library research with an emphasis upon computer based research.

Assessment by final examination and on-course assessment.
