Introduction to Underwater Videography

18 hours lectures, 18 hours workshops, 18 hours field work. December block mode.

Available to all students with basic open water diving certificate; minimum 15 hours logged diving time; inclusion on the JCU Dive Register and current AS2299 Dive Medical Certificate. All students wishing to enrol must complete and submit the appropriate application form to the subject coordinator.

This subject combines a comprehensive coverage of the use of digital video equiment, materials and techniques of underwater videography with a thorough grounding in applicable workplace health and safety and environmental conservation concerns and procedures. Students will also be instructed in the proper care and maintenance of the equipment and will acquire basic competency in the editing of video footage using Macintosh computer equipment.

Extensive field work on the Great Barrier Reef is a major component of this subject and additional costs therefore apply for field trips, loan equipment and accommodation (if away from student's residential base).

Learning Objectives:

the principles governing the proper use, care and maintenance of underwater digital camera equipment and computer editing equipment;

the nature and manipulation of both natural and artificial light underwater;

sequence based storytelling as applied to underwater videography;

the application of workplace health and safety and environmental conservation concerns;

the production of underwater video footage that is relevant to the student's specific discipline/career/interest/professional area.

Assessment by quizzes/tests (25%); supervised practical assignments (50%); final edited video clip (25%).
