Jazz Studies is a general subject on jazz history that covers the various styles of jazz from its origins through to the present. Recordings by key artists associated with various jazz styles are examined and notable features of individual songs, such as texture, harmony and form are analysed.

Learning Objectives:

an appreciation of the various styles of jazz;

an understanding of the manner in which jazz has developed throughout the 20th century;

a knowledge of the music of the key artists associated with each different jazz style;

a general knowledge of jazz harmony, texture and form.

Assessment by mid-semester aural examination (15%); end-of-semester aural examination (35%); essay (2,500 words) (50%).
