Introduction to Digital Imaging

Townsville, Cairns

13 hours lectures, 26 hours practicals. Semester 1 (Townsville campus); Semester 2 (Cairns campus).

Available to all students, however preference will be given to Bachelor of Photography and Bachelor of Visual Arts students.

This subject introduces students to the use of technology for digital imaging and manipulation. Areas to be examined will include setting up and use of hardware and peripherals such as scanners and mass storage devices; operation of software used in the digital photographic process and in production and management of contemporary photographic studios and trouble shooting hardware, software and network problems. Students learn how to access current photography and production related information and resources using a variety of communication media and to manage and structure their output.

Learning Objectives:

gain an understanding of basic operations including hardware, peripherals and operating systems as they relate to photographic imaging;

become familiar with the range of software used in photographic processes and production;

understand and make use of email, newsgroups and the web as resources for both digital and conventional photography;

develop an understanding of the photographic opportunities in a digital society.

Assessment by three assignments (60%); written research project (20%); written test (20%).
