This is the second of six units in the Bachelor of Communication Design's multimedia stream. Through a series of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions, this subject will examine the theory, practice and techniques relating to the use of sound in multimedia projects. Students will learn sound input techniques using basic system software and more advanced editing and mixing using programs such as Quicktime Pro, Sound Edit 16 and Final Cut Pro. Emphasis will be given to the development of an analytical approach to creative problem solving founded on an understanding of the relevant production processes. The subject provides the essential background to capturing music, narration and sound FX for multimedia. It covers current industry standards for sound used in film and television, web and other multimedia platforms.

Learning Objectives:

utilise available computer software and information resources at an advanced level for creative, research and technical purposes;

apply appropriate and creative design solutions to given problems and follow these solutions through several production phases in a manner suited to the selected production process;

be able to record and produce a variety of sound resources based on music, sound effects and voice inputs;

understand a range of issues relating to sound quality, depth and compression;

understand the copyright laws as they relate to music and sound production both nationally and internationally.

Assessment by four practical assignments (total 80%); research seminar (10%); participation (10%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject.
