Commercial Drawing and Illustration Techniques 1

Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

An introduction to commercial drawing and illustration techniques. Students enrolled in this subject will undertake a series of theoretical and practical workshops designed to develop a broad understanding of their function, philosophy and role of commercial drawing and illustration in contemporary society. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of research and investigative activities through exercises designed to utilise a variety of design solutions. Students will develop a basic expertise in a range of media, design related skills and will examine several concept building techniques that underpin the professional practice of illustration -- thus creating a solid foundation of understanding of design principles and sound drawing and illustration skills.

Learning Objectives:

become competent with a variety of black and white media;

apply design principles and rendering techniques to promote a product or service in the most successful manner;

demonstrate a basic understanding of traditional and contemporary illustration and drawing processes and apply this knowledge in the formulation of the student's work;

develop a range of analytical and critical skills related to design practice;

produce effective, monochromatic drawings and illustrations.

Assessment by end of semester examination (20%); three practical assignments (20% each, 60%); journal (20%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject unless prior arrangement has been made with the lecturer and academic adviser or Head of College.
