Available to BMus and BEd students who have passed the music rudiments test.

Students will continue their ongoing study of tonal music theory and composition techniques and will undertake a study of contemporary music songwriting and analysis. Further studies in orchestration and arrangement are undertaken with a focus on arranging contemporary popular music and further skills are deveoped in the field of music technology.

Learning Objectives:

gain an understanding of techniques used in tonal music composition and anlaysis;

gain an understanding of contemporary songwriting techniques and analysis;

gain a knowledge of contemporary/popular music and the manner in which music is composed and arranged for contemporary/popular ensembles;

gain a practical knowledge of further hardware and software systems used in music technology.

Assessment by components of: Tonal music - worksheets (10%); assignments (10%); examination (5%). Composition - portfolio (10%); analysis (10%); examination (5%). Orchestration - arrangement (10%); worksheets (10%); performance (5%). Music technology - examination (5%); assignments (20%).
