Introduction to Research Methodology

Available to students with a bachelor's degree in Communication Design, Music, Photography, Theatre, Visual Arts or equivalent qualification.

This subject focuses upon the need for methodology/formal recognition of the techniques and issues involved in creative arts research documentation and practice. It leads students to a critical examination of the theoretical/practical aspects of a variety of research strategies as well as providing experience of creative arts techniques. Students are introduced to flexible delivery formats allowing for AV presentation, performance, discussion and other practical activities.

Learning Objectives:

identify the requirements, conditions and issues associated with the implementation and management of a research project;

use computer software to enhance the management, analysis and production of a research project;

identify and discuss the major theoretical perspectives particular to the various disciplines in creative arts;

acquire the skills of conducting a formal analysis of artistic forms of expression;

enable candidates to locate their work within the framework of their discipline of contemporary arts practice;

introduce candidates to a range of research methodologies, practice and theories.

Assessment by seminar presentation (25%); accompanying seminar paper (20%); methodology journal (20%); two assignments (15% and 20%).
