Flora, Fauna and Fantasy Illustration

Available to non-Bachelor of Communication Design students.

This subject will introduce the student to several diverse fields of illustration and related illustrative techniques. Botanical, wildlife and the realms of fantasy illustration will be explored. Emphasis is placed on the practical application of research and investigative activities through exercises designed to utilise a variety of design solutions and rendering styles. Through an exploration of a wide range of media used in the illustration industry and by developing a basic range of draughtsmanship skills, students will become aware of their role as artists and designers.

Learning Objectives:

demonstrate competence in using a wide range of coloured media;

gain an appreciation of the functional and aesthetic qualities of illustration and drawing;

produce effective illustrations and drawing;

develop a range of analytical and critical skills related to design practice;

develop an understanding of several fields of illustration and related practice.

Assessment by three practical assignments (90%); visual journal (10%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject unless prior arrangement has been made with the lecturer.
