Mathematical Foundations
39 hours lectures, 13 hours practice classes. Semester 1 (Townsville and Cairns campus); Semester 2 (Townsville campus). This subject may be offered by flexible delivery mode dependent on student enrolments.
Dr W Read (Townsville campus),
Mr M Steele (Cairns campus).
Algebra including partial fractions and the binomial theorem; analytic geometry; functions and graphs; inverse functions; exponential and logarithmic functions; trigonometry; differentiation, including implicit differentiation and related rates; stationary points, curve sketching; simple integration. The subject is designed for students with an OP of 12 or better. Students who do not have this level of preparation will be encouraged to consider MA1020 to build their foundation in Mathematics.
students are expected to revise and enhance elementary skills from secondary school mathematics, with active participation in practicals to supplement the lecture presentations. The mathematical applications include simple modelling exercises in science and engineering, with ancillary computer software to assist calculation and understanding.
