Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

This subject is designed to extend students' understanding of graphic design and illustration. Students will undertake a range of advanced projects designed to extend their conceptual and practical skills to a level of proficiency and autonomy appropriate for commercial application in a range of appropriate media. Illustration theory will also be explored. Students will develop a broad understanding of the technical function, philosophy and role of the various illustrative genres in contemporary society. Emphasis will be given to the development of a professional approach to the creative visual process, improving and refining technical approaches to illustration and building upon the student's pre-established foundation level understanding of core illustration activities.

Learning Objectives:

utilise available computer software and information resources at an advanced level for creative, research and technical purposes;

refine knowledge and application of traditional techniques and media;

develop a deeper understanding of the influences, function and role of the various fields of illustration through production of high quality work and presentation;

further develop a professional personal style.

Assessment by tutorial presentation (20%); three practical assignments (60%); visual journal (20%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject unless prior arrangement has been made with the lecturer, academic adviser or Head of College.
