Visual Communication Study 2

13 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials, 26 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Available to students enrolled in the BCommunication Design degree.

A series of theoretical and practical workshops will be conducted exploring creative illustration fields such as: children's book illustration, newspaper/article illustration, cartooning and caricature, fantasy and science fiction illustration, fashion and product/packaging illustration.

Both traditional and contemporary methods will be explored. Emphasis will be on the development of highly innovative concepts and further developing a personal visual code and approach, as well as the interpretation of subject matter.

Studies will include: introduction to a range of media, specific to above-mentioned fields of illustration; preparing artwork for publication; illustrating a specific text; portfolio presentation techniques; concept building skills.

Learning Objectives:

have a comprehensive working knowledge of traditional techniques and media;

become familiar with a more comprehensive range of illustration fields;

produce high quality presentation visuals;

develop a range of analytical and critical skills related to design practice;

produce effective, full colour drawings and illustrations for publication;

effective use of colour for maximum impact;

further develop a personal style/visual code;

develop the skills of an accomplished draughtsman.

Assessment by end of year examination (20%); three practical assignments (60%); visual journal (20%). Attendance of 80% at practical workshops is required to pass this subject unless prior arrangement has been made with the lecturer, academic adviser or Head of College.
