Principles of Criminal Law A

26 hours lectures, 12 hours tutorials. Semester 1.

Available to all level 1 students.

Principles of criminal responsibility; aims of the criminal law; criminal procedure including the classification of offences; jurisdiction; bail; summary proceedings; trial of indictable offences; appeals; homicide; causation; partial defences; non fatal offences against the person and related defences.

Learning Objectives:

teach the essentials of criminal procedure;

introduce the tools of analysis used in criminal law;

examine the basis of criminal responsibility;

attain familiarity with the offence of homicide and related defences.

Assessment by final examination (70%); assignment (20%); tutorial participation (10%) (subject to variation).
