Introduction to Visual Arts

39 hours practicals. Semester 1 and 2.

Available to all students except BVA students, Bachelor of Education students undertaking a major/sub-major in art, or students who have completed Year 12 Art. Students must register for a practical class through LearnJCU.

Students will be introduced to a variety of media in the visual arts through a series of practical classes in ceramics, drawing, printmaking and painting. Building confidence through simple exercises using basic design fundamentals, students will begin to apply the resulting skills and knowledge to more complex creative problem solving activities. Students attend one practical class of three hours per week. These classes are supported by on-line Art History modules.

Learning Objectives:

develop an understanding of the visual arts and an appreciation of the role of the visual arts in the society;

explore and gain confidence in the use of a variety of media and techniques in the visual arts;

become familiar with the language of the visual arts in order to develop skills in appraisal and evaluation of its processes and products.

Assessment by four practical projects (15% each); visual diary (25%); theory test on on-line module content (15%).
