Bachelor of Engineering - Bachelor of Science

Townsville; Cairns (level 1 studies only)

Multiple combinations are possible between any major of engineering and most of the BSc majors. See Associate Dean for details.

Bachelor of Information Technology

Modern business and society are increasingly computer reliant. In recent years the Internet, the WWW and computer networks have become essential everyday business tools. The people who make these computer systems work are called Information Technology (IT) professionals. Not surprisingly, the IT industry is one of the world's prestige industries and IT graduates can expect exciting and rewarding careers, anywhere in the world.

The BInfTech course features a unique-to-JCU program of real IT work experience on real IT industry projects, and all BInfTech students can choose to participate. A private company, NQ-ITX (North Queensland IT eXperience), has been established by students and staff of the School of IT to provide advanced level industry experience and business skilling. All NQ-ITX involvement builds the student's CV, skills and job readiness. Students will emerge from their studies with an uncommon level of business and IT skills, ready for employment or ready to create their own ICT intensive business. Project work within NQ-ITX provides:

project work within project teams that counts towards BInfTech project subjects;

real work experience on real industry jobs giving critical hard-core IT skills;

the demands of meeting real deadlines and satisfying real performance measures give operational business skills for real people and project management skills.

This degree prepares students for work in a wide range of IT intensive industries. It combines a solid basis of computing theory with practical knowledge and skills in software (languages), software engineering, multimedia, databases and networking. Specialisation is provided in the eight majors of Industry Professional, Bioinformatics, Business Computing, General Computing, E-business Entrepreneurship, Computer Technology, Specific Application and Geographic Information Systems.

For this rapidly changing field, prior to enrolment students are advised to verify subject and course specifications from the school web site, www.it.jcu.edu.au.

Note that the testamur for a Bachelor of Information Technology does not show the major studied.
