General Pathobiology

Mechanisms of disease processes are addressed. Thus, the general principles of pathobiology are covered with particular reference to the different causes and mechanisms of disease.

Learning Objectives:

understand how cells respond to injury of diverse type;

appreciate at the cellular level the difference between cell degeneration and death, and adaption of cells to an altered extracellular environment;

describe the cellular changes that occur in such states as genetic disorders, inflammation, immunopathology and neoplasia;

describe in general terms the procedures routinely used in diagnostic pathology.

Assessment by attendance at practical classes and related examination (25%); three-hour written examination (70%); assignments (5%).
