Engineering Statics

Townsville, Cairns

HECS Band 2

39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials, practicals, seminars and site visits. Semester 1.

Vector mechanics. Particle and rigid body statics. Plane section properties, centroids and second moments of area. Equilibrium of a body in two- and three-dimensions. Analysis of simple trusses and frames. Introduction to distributive loads. Analysis of internal forces - axial load, shear force and bending moment. Development of shear force and bending moment diagrams.

Learning Objectives:

learn and implement the basic engineering fundamentals in the calculation of forces and reactions in engineering statics for two- and three-dimensional bodies;

develop and practise strategies and tactics for problem identification, formulation and solution;

develop effective engineering communication by (a) learning effective problem layout; (b) practising the use of tools such as word processor, equation editor and spreadsheet and (c) learning clear and concise report writing skills;

form study and problem solving teams for the development and practice of teamwork and leadership skills.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
