26 hours lectures, 26 hours tutorials, 26 hour practicals. Semester 1.

Engineering in society - professional bodies, learned societies; ethics and professional responsibility.

Engineering communication - technical report writing; seminar presentations; teamwork; hand sketching; AutoCAD.

Engineering problem solving, design and management - engineering analysis; use of engineering software; open-ended problem solving; the design process; selection of alternatives; economic evaluation; project planning and resource management.

Engineering safety - occupational health and safety; duty of care; legislation; safe management of workplaces.

Learning Objectives:

to understand the place of engineering and engineers in society;

to undertake a significant engineering design task;

to develop effective written, oral and pictorial communication skills.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
