Tropical Flora of Australia

26 hours lectures, 30 hours practicals, 3 days field work. Semester 2.

This field-based subject is an advanced treatment of the Australian flora with an emphasis on understanding the distribution and diversity of the tropical flora. The interplay of Gondwanic and invasive elements, as well as the significance of non-angiosperm families in the Australian flora, will be developed.

Learning Objectives:

to gain an understanding of the origins and development of the Australia flora;

to develop an appreciation and understanding of the underlying factors involved in the conservation and management of tropical floras;

to gain experience in identifying plants;

to undertake a mini-research project, introducing the scope and form of higher research degrees (honours and masters) available in the school.

Assessment by examination (60%); on-course assessment (40%).
