Land Degradation Field Studies

Available only to students enrolled in a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science.

This is a field based intensive subject which provides a practical introduction to land degradation issues in tropical Australia. It covers the causes and environmental impacts of improper land management and contemporary pollution issues. Topics presented include contaminated site assessment, mine site pollution and rehabilitation, soil erosion, acid sulphate soils, dryland salinity and soil acidification.

Learning Objectives:

recognition and documentation of land degradation issues in the field;

a general background in the mineralogical, chemical and physical processes involved in land degradation;

acquire an overview of procedures and strategies directed to the sustainable management of agricultural, industrial and mining areas.

Assessment by presentations (25%); practical tasks (25%); essays (50%).
