The ecology, systematics, structure and function of terrestrial arthropods including the insects, arachnids and myriapods.

Topics include evolution and systematics of terrestrial arthropods; structure and function of insect systems; biological control and integrated pest management; collecting, curating and identifying terrestrial arthropods.

Learning Objectives:

to appreciate the diversity of terrestrial arthropods;

to correctly identify and curate terrestrial arthropods;

to know the variety of techniques used to collect terrestrial arthropods;

to understand the theory behind biological control and integrated pest management;

to understand the evolutionary relationships between the major groups of terrestrial arthropods.

Assessment by theory examination (50%); practical examination (20%); insect collection (20%); project (10%).
