Material Selection in Design

39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials, seminars, field trips, practicals and workshops. Semester 1.

Technical report writing and oral presentation. Material selection and application in design: use of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, metal alloys, plastics, composites, synthetic and natural rubbers, etc. Introduction to tribology: elementary contact mechanics, friction, wear and lubrication.

Learning Objectives:

to develop student's technical communication skills;

to enhance student knowledge of the use of traditional and non-traditional materials in design;

to provide students with a knowledge of the fundamentals of tribology.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
