Mass Transfer Operations

Townsville

HECS Band 2

39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials and laboratory classes. Semester 1.

Available to level 3 chemical engineering students.

Transport phenomena approach to mass transfer. Interphase mass transfer. General principles of mass transfer operations in stagewise and continuous contact equipment. Mass transfer effects in separation and reaction systems. Binary distillation, evaporation, gas absorption combined heat and mass transfer in devices such as water cooling towers and dryers, ternary diagrams, liquid-liquid extraction and multicomponent equilibrium and distillation.

Learning Objectives:

to provide students with knowledge of the basic processes of mass transfer;

to apply this knowledge to the design of industrial processes involving mass transfer (e.g. distillation towers, cooling towers, liquid-liquid extraction systems, etc.)

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
