Physical Chemistry . Stoichiometry, gas laws, chemical kinetics, catalysis (enzymatic applications), thermochemistry, equilibrium, acid-base chemistry, electrochemistry (cell membrane applications, corrosion, batteries). Colligative properties (osmosis).

Environmental Chemistry. Atmospheric chemistry, ozone formation and depletion, water chemistry, acid rain, stable isotopes, radiochemistry, the carbon cycle.

Learning Objectives:

be introduced to basic chemical principles and characteristic chemical reactions;

appreciate the application and relevance of these principles and reactions to a range of scientific disciplines, including the biological, earth and environmental sciences;

be familiar with, and competent in the application of, simple laboratory techniques in chemistry.

Assessment by laboratory work and reports (20%); CAL modules (5%); tests (33%); two-hour examination (42%).
