Contemporary Approaches to Research in Environmental Studies and Geography

This subject provides an overview of contemporary research methods in environmental studies and geography. The objectives of the subject are to provide students with knowledge of and competence in research methods including: planning and developing research projects, developing terms of reference when commissioning research/reports and reviews; writing and critically reviewing research proposals and research papers and evaluating the extent to which completed research fulfils objectives set in the terms of reference and to identify and address ethical issues in research and the application of research results. Practical experience is also provided in research design, the use of SPSS and the quantitative analysis and interpretation of research data and review of case studies.

Learning Objectives:

to provide honours and postgraduate students with a stronger theoretical framework for their research by increasing their understanding of the appropriate use of various research paradigms and methodologies used by environmental scientists and geographers.

Assessment by examination and test (50%); written assignments (50%).
