Professional Practice for Scientists

An essential subject for students wishing to become effective professionals. Focuses on teamwork and group interaction in the context of the environmental professional. Topics include group development, processes and dynamics; developing the basis of interaction skills including conflict resolution and decision making. Introduction to the use of tools and resources of group work.

Learning Objectives:

some appreciation of interpersonal differences and their impact on team functioning;

a basic knowledge of group dynamics;

teamwork skills;

knowledge and experience of the processes and procedures required to undertake a successful research project in Environmental Science;

basic knowledge of questionnaire design;

improved skills in verbal and written communication.

On-course assessment (team assessment items: research project; seminar research proposal (50%); individual assessment items: project notebook; literature review (50%)).
