Introductory Human Anatomy and Histology

Townsville

HECS Band 2

13 hours lectures, 39 hours practicals, 13 hours synthesising sessions. Semester 2.

Staff:

Dr K Domett (Coordinator).

Human anatomy is the study of the structure of our body and is pivotal to our ability to function as human beings. This subject provides an introduction to the structure of the human body from the cellular (histology) to organ system (macroscopic) levels. Using a combination of human material, models, microscopes and state-of-the-art imaging techniques, the student will explore the structure and organisation of the body's major organ systems and their relation to biological function. Thus they will gain an integrated understanding of the human body. Functional and clinical case-studies will facilitate the integration of material and the correlation of structure to function.

Learning Objectives:

to acquire and accurately use anatomical terminology;

to gain a basic understanding of the body's major systems including the nervous, musculoskeletal, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, urinary, reproductive and endocrine systems;

to provide a basis for subsequent advanced and applied studies requiring a knowledge of human anatomy.

Assessment by written examination (70%); practical examination (30%).
