Advanced Fluid Mechanics

39 hours lectures, 39 hours tutorials, seminars, field trips, practicals or workshops. Semester 1.

Analysis of pipe and duct networks. Pressure transients in pipes.Turbomachinery: water turbines and pumps, cavitation, pump selection fan and compressors. Potential flow. Boundary layer theory: laminar and turbulent boundary layers, separation, methods for calculating boundary layers. Flow over immersed bodies: drag, lift, aerofoils, flow induced vibration and aircraft performance. Compressible flows: gas dynamics, transonic and supersonic flows, nozzles and ducts. Measurement techniques. Computational fluid dynamics. Applications of fluid flow in industrial and emerging technologies.

Learning Objectives:

to develop the student's understanding of advanced fluid mechanics concepts and theory;

to exercise the student's skill in identifying and applying appropriate methods to solve fluid flow problems analytically or numerically;

to read the fluid mechanics literature and communicate the developments to a critical audience;

to develop skills in communicating results and its application to fellow engineers.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
