James Cook University Subject Handbook - 2003

Bachelor of Arts

Townsville, Cairns

The Bachelor of Arts degree provides students with an opportunity to complete a coherent course of study specialising in at least one area of knowledge. They are also able to combine study in several areas to obtain unique combinations of skills and background knowledge for maximum flexibility in preparation for the workforce. Students may complete a major in a single discipline, in two disciplines (a double major) or general course of study.

The structure of the degree ensures that graduates of the Bachelor of Arts have skills in oral and written communication. They are skilled researchers able to seek out information, critically analyse and evaluate evidence and plan solutions to problems in a logical and organised manner. They are able to use modern information technologies and to manage numerical information in a manner appropriate to their area of specialisation. They have a sound understanding of cultural diversity, an awareness of Indigenous Australian cultures and training in ethical conduct in at least one field of study. They have been challenged to develop creative and innovative solutions to problems and to adapt knowledge to new situations.

Majors in the Bachelor of Arts degree

Graduation with a Bachelor of Arts degree requires the completion of 72 units of academic credit which can be achieved by a full-time student in three years or over a longer period for part-time students. Units of credit are accrued through the completion of subjects with each subject being valued at a specified number of units. Most subjects are worth 3 units of academic credit but some at level 2 and 3 are worth 4 or 6 units. The unit value of a subject indicates the work load it requires of the student: the higher the unit value, the greater the workload. Students enrolled full-time normally complete 4 subjects per semester or 12 units of academic credit. Whether comprised of four 3-unit subjects or three 4-unit subjects, the amount of work required of a full-time student is the same. By 2004, all subjects offered through the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences will be valued at 3 units or a multiple of 3.

Students should select a major in the Bachelor of Arts. A major requires completion of 26 or 27 units of academic credit (or 8 to 9 subjects) in a specified field. A typical sequence of study to complete a major involves completing

Students may complete more than 27 units of academic credit in their selected major, if they wish. A minimum of 12 units of study at level 3 must be completed in approved subjects for the major. No more than 18 units of study may be selected from subjects in tables other than Table 1a of the Master Schedule of Subjects.

The core subjects for each major are listed below. For more information about each major and the recommended electives to be studied as part of the degree, please consult the Arts and Social Sciences Subject Information Booklet available in the enrolment packs, from the Faculty Office or at this web address http://www.jcu.aess.edu.au/coursebooklet.

Please note that some subjects are offered every year, others in even-numbered years only (eg 2002, 2004) or odd-numbered years only (eg 2003, 2005) and some subjects are available in Cairns or Townsville only. These restrictions are listed beside the relevant subjects. If no restriction is listed, then the subject is available every year at both campuses.

Honours

Honours in the Bachelor of Arts comprises a separate fourth year of study in the major in which the student completes a thesis and Honours subjects. An Honours year is available to selected students in the majors offered in the BA with the following exceptions: Communication, Japanese, Music, Theatre and Visual Arts. To complete an honours year in the latter three disciplines students must enrol in a specialist degree.

Students who have completed a double major may undertake joint honours. Such students enrol in HU4000:12 or SS4000:12 (Joint Honours Thesis) and take honours subjects in each of the two disciplines. Students must consult the honours coordinators for each discipline to determine the course of study to be undertaken.
