Australian Literature 1

26 hours lectures, 20 hours seminars/tutorials. Semester 2.

An extended study of representative Australian works of the Modern period.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to broaden and intensify the literary-critical skills and understanding attained by students at earlier levels;
  2. to acquire a detailed knowledge of each of the texts set for study;
  3. to develop an understanding of the cultural, social and literary milieu in which the texts originated;
  4. to acquire some knowledge of the history of their critical reception and the factors determining this;
  5. to develop research skills, to use the library resources and meet the editorial conventions of the discipline.

Assessment by two 2000 word essays (40%); weekly tutorial participation (20%); one three-hour examination (40%). This subject is taught in conjunction with EL2035 . Students enrolled in EL3035 will have more extensive assessment at a higher level.
