The subject involves indepth explorations of a wide range of Australian poetry, organised thematically around selections from the set text, supplemented by other material. Topics covered may include: the Indigenous; war; the regions; death; childhood; masculinity and femininity; performance poetry.
Learning Objectives:
- a detailed knowledge of the majority of poems in the set text;
- a high degree of competence in analysing poetry in terms of both content and form;
- an understanding of major contemporary Australian poetic styles;
- an understanding of the different critical and contextual approaches to the reading of poetry.
Assessment by two essays of 2000 words each (40%); class participation (20%); one three-hour end-of-semester examination (40%).
