Conserving Tropical Rainforests

20 hours lectures, 6 hours tutorials, 24 hours workshops, 24 hours field work. Semester 1.

Principles and concepts in rainforest conservation management including detailed studies of selected methods and problems; management of tropical rainforest environments globally including ecological, economic and social aspects; land capability, land degradation, sustainability; protected area management and conservation issues outside reserves.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop comprehension and appreciation of human-rainforest relationships, especially links with forest resources and ecological processes;
  2. develop conceptual frameworks for analysis and evaluation;
  3. have an awareness and understanding of the major global issues in the conservation of biodiversity in rainforests and of ecologically sustainable management.

Assessment by examination, essay, field work or project.
