Indigenous Community Management and Development 1

Semester 1. 13 hours optional tutorials available at Cairns campus and videolinked to Townsville campus.

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.

This introductory subject discusses the need for Indigenous controlled organisations and their role in service delivery and advocacy. Topic areas include: governance and Indigenous organisational management; industrial relations and human resources management; strategic planning and developing networks; media relations; financial control and community development and social planning.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of Indigenous Australian Affairs;
  2. develop an understanding of the unique nature of Indigenous organisations;
  3. gain an understanding of the unique nature between Government/s and Indigenous peoples;
  4. gain an understanding of how community development processes are applied in Indigenous organisations;
  5. develop theoretical expertise as a potential community manager.

Assessment by journal (50%); major essay (45%); participation (5%).
