A study of the theoretical ideas, both past and contemporary, which underlie critical practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to broaden and intensify the theoretical understanding and critical skills attained by students at earlier levels;
  2. to gain a thorough overview of historical developments in theories and methodologies in language, literature and communication studies;
  3. to gain a detailed understanding of current developments in the area;
  4. to develop the ability to relate current ideas to reading and critical practice in the areas of language, literature and communication.

Assessment by assignments (40%); tutorial participation (20%); one three-hour examination (40%).
