Quaternary Environmental Change

This subject introduces an historical dimension to the study of Australian biogeography. The impacts of plate tectonics, climate change and evolutionary history are explored as are the onset of aridity and arrival of humans on the Australian continent. The importance of historical influences on modern day environmental problems is emphasised.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to outline historical factors influencing the development of the Australian biota;
  2. to introduce methods of reconstructing past environments;
  3. to explore connections between Australian and overseas biotas;
  4. to explore the relationship between modern day environmental problems and their historical underplannings.

Assessment by essay, field report, examination. Weightings for each item will be decided in consultation with students.
