Indigenous Community Management and Development 2

Semester 1. 13 hours optional tutorials available at Cairns campus and videolinked to Townsville campus.

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.

This subject explores the relationship between Indigenous organisations and government. Students will examine case studies and the impact of government policy on Indigenous organisations, community capacity building and Indigenous peoples’ right to self-determination.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop a view of Australia’s history, political, social and cultural frameworks from an Indigenous perspective;
  2. ability to critically analyse government policies and their impact on Indigenous people;
  3. challenge and review student’s own personal views and attitudes towards Indigenous people and issues;
  4. develop knowledge and contribute to informed debate about current Indigenous issues.

Assessment by journal (50%); major essay (45%); participation (5%).
