The subject provides a focus on the elements of jazz and improvisation (form, texture and harmony) employed by numerous artists in varying jazz styles.

Learning Objectives:

  1. a deeper appreciation of the various styles of jazz;
  2. an understanding of the manner in which jazz has developed throughout the 20th century;
  3. a knowledge of the musical tools used by artists in different jazz styles;
  4. an enhanced knowledge of jazz forms, harmony and timbre.

Assessment by two short analyses (20%); seminar presentation (40%); essay (2500 words) (40%).
