Bachelor of Applied Science

Townsville, Cairns

Concern about our impact on the environment has resulted in a dramatic expansion in the need for investigation and monitoring of the environment and the impact of human activities. The Bachelor of Applied Science provides the ideal platform for careers in environmental science or management, working in areas such as protected area management, environmental impact assessment and restoration of degraded land. These programs conform with draft accreditation requirements of the Environment Institute of Australia.

Other strands of the Bachelor of Applied Science in Biological Science and Molecular Science are under development and may become available in 2000. Contact the Faculty of Science and Engineering for further information.

Aquaculture

Aquaculture, the commercial farming of aquatic plants and animals, includes freshwater, brackish, marine (mariculture) and hypersaline systems. It is becoming increasingly important globally as a source of food, especially as many wild fisheries are being exploited at or above their sustainable yields. The major gains in production of aquatic resources in recent years have come from increased output from aquaculture, especially in Asia where traditional practices have been improved through modern research and technology.

The Aquaculture program builds on basic Biological Science subjects in level 1 and level 2, with specialised Aquaculture subjects in levels 2, 3 and 4. It introduces students to the concept of Aquaculture and develops particular areas. There is some emphasis on tropical Aquaculture. Northern Australia has major industries and developing industries, e.g. pearl oysters, prawns, redclaw crayfish, barramundi, aquarium fish and crocodiles.

Environmental and Urban Planning

Professionally trained environmental and urban planners are increasingly coming to the fore in the process of ecologically sustainable development. The initial skills needed to assess whether development is acceptable and which elements of project design are appropriate can only be gained through a course of tertiary study. This program provides a career qualification which is widely recognised by employers.
